We have received a tremendous amount of feedback from fans that the

First, i have to assume that winning money (or tix) on magic online would be allowed, that wizards would eventually redeem tix into cash, and that MODO III would ...

Graphic design/skills would be appreciated, but right now we just need a PHP guru who can help us get going beyond this free forum we have right now.

don't think we have forgotten about you! We are currently working on the best way to build the new website, and it might take a little time, but Evan and Eelco threw some good ideas to the pot.

About the Union's name: For now it's here to stay. As we open the new website, we'll decide wether or not we keep it. I've been silently following the discussion on the other topic and keep in mind the suggestions.

I'll give you updates on what's going on soon!

Are we committed to "Mtg Player's Union" being the official name?

The word "union" is considered to be a negative term by somewhere between a third to half of the people in the US. Think of it as being similar to a priest belonging to an organization with the word "whorehouse" in its title. Even if its not a whorehouse in the sense of The Bunny Ranch, a priest would having difficulties joining and passionately defending the organization.

Due to the nature of the formation of our union, we need to establish certain guidelines (Bi-laws) in which we are established to be taken seriously. We have two groups of people in this union (Pros, and Joes) and we need to be able to adhear to both of them.
I think there is one serious misconception about the so-called "casual" players. And that is, that everyone starts playing Magic as a casual player.

Yes, the decks and formats (multiplayer, for example) played by beginners tend to resemble those of the self-proclaimed casual players, and beginning players are sometimes scared by the tournament scene and reluctant to join it, but that's not exactly the same as genuinely not being interested in competition!

Take me for example: ...

These are the issues I can see

1) No one outside of WotC seemed to have any clue that Champs was unsuccessful.

With his latest win in Kuala Lumpur many have re-proclaimed Jon Finkel to be the greatest Magic player ever. His list of accomplishments is long and varied highlighted by 3 PT victories (tied for the second most ever) and a staggering 12 PT top 8s (the highest total on record). The only man that can even contend with his claim to all-time-best is of course Kai Budde. The German Juggernaut amassed 7 PT victories out of 9 top 8s (second most ever, behind Finkel). Kai is also the leader on both ...

Hello people,

the meeting in KL took place. Fried Meulders, Frank Karsten, Luis Scott Vargas, Ruud Warmenhoven and myself were attending. On WotC's side, Chris Galvin, Scott Larabee, Helene Bergeot and Devin Low were attending.

The meeting lasted two hours and a half with questions asked and answers given.

We will work on a summary of the meeting with the others and post it here as soon as it is ready.

I am personnaly happy with how it went. Do not expect too much though! ...

There's been much talk of sponsorship of the Pro Tour lately, mostly in comparison to professional sports. I'd like to mention a few things.

I'll use the example of American football, but this extends to most, if not all, of the major sport in this country (the US).

First, in order to properly draw parallels, the NFL is to football as the DCI is to Magic, it is the overall governing/sanctioning body. It is in charge of rules and organization, and it handles some licensing for the teams ...

My name is Vinicius Santos Rodrigues, I live in Brazil and I am a regular player of this good game Magic: The Gathering and regular follower of the news within the game, championships and so on. And to be clear about what I'm talking about: I'm talking about the most intentionally cheap, lame-ass Pro tour event that could ever be imagined. WotC doesn't have the money to put on a real PT. So let's talk about how to do one, just one, on the cheap.

And when I say intentionally lame-ass, that's exactly what I mean. There's no way to dress up a PT done cheaply to be anything ...

-The money would come from the prize money of the PT Cut.

-It would still save them the costs of the logistics used to organize the PT (the biggest part of the budget of a PT).

I was wasting my math class today and was thinking of these ideas.

PTQs, as I understand, are the driving force behind the Pro Tour. After 8/9 rounds of Swiss and getting your hands on Tarmogofys and Thoughseizes, you have to hope that you get a X-2 record just to get into the Top 8! Then you have ...

The power of the lever, or exactly what does Hasbro owe anyone?

It is very clear that the pro-tour is a marketing tool. I follows the exact same structure as sports leagues, where championships and players are promoted to bring more interest to the league itself. *Come see our brightest stars and you too can be like them!!* In major sports this strategy generates money by selling tickets, television rights, shirts and other assorted goodies. Players of these extremely popular sports work for private business (FIFA, NFL, NBA), and their salaries are determined ...

Hasbro and WotC to make money?

What I never understood is how WotC or Hasbro has never opened up a 'secondary market' for selling Magic Cards. They sell booster packs, fat packs, tournament decks and premade decks but never any Magic singles. I think if WotC would sell singles from their website, it would make the company more money.

A booster pack is $5 with tax, and you have a chance at opening up a pack with a $20 rare. Why not just sell the rare for $20? They would make more of a profit, which is what they are after ...

Concrete Suggestions

The other threads (especially #First Steps) are getting crowded with mixed topics, so I think this new thread might be a good idea for listing serious suggestions to improve the PT system.

I would say, to establish better lines of communication between WotC and the players (pros and PTAs), can already be identified as the minimum goal of this project, so I'm not concerning myself with that here. The following are my thoughts on how the possibility for professional magic playing might be ...

I think there's one thing WOTC really miscalculated.

They have to assume that if, all of the sudden, all pros or most of them had to quit the game, they would be replaced by new ones. I don't believe that theory is correct.

They probably considered the past as a reference as far as replacing the pros is concerned. In the American pros (Finkel, YMG, Rose, Benafel etc etc) where replaced by Europeans, then the Europeans (Budde, Baberowski, Mello, Wallamaies etc etc) where replaced by ...

Do you think that WotC should start bringing the PT and more GPs to South America with a possibility to expand into the Middle East as well as other regions of the globe that are yet to witness such events?

So far we already have on record that the DCI has expanded into Iraq recently prior to rebuilding efforts by US Coalition Forces. Then there are still a lot of places on the Globe that are yet to witness such events. For the record, there have been no Middle Eastern Events period and ...
